The teaching of reading at Gordonvale State
School
At Gordonvale State School, we provide a balanced
explicit Reading Program that caters for the needs of all learners across at all
developmental stages.
Prep-Year 3
Students are streamed into developmental stage
groupings. At each group level, activities are provided to cater for the current
learning needs. These activities cover a range of areas, including Phonics,
Sight Words, Guided Reading, Comprehension Strategies and Vocabulary
development. Each activity is supervised by a staff member, or in some cases,
where this is not possible, by a parent volunteer,. Reading Groups operate four
days a week, for 1 hour a day. Benchmarks for reading achievement are set for
each student, and closely monitored by teachers and supervising staff.
Years 4-7
Reading in years 4-7 is largely completed in the
regular classroom setting, but with additional support at specific times
throughout the year. Specialist support is tailored to the needs of each student
and each class, with activities designed to best support all students to access
the curriculum.
